Working From Home Advice
10 Tips to Work Well From Home
Tip #1 - Maintain Regular Hours
Most office based workers stick to a
planned schedule of working time, for
example 9-5. Having a clear idea of
exactly when you’ll work at home is
also good. Knowing when you should
be taking breaks will help you structure
the day and logging off on time helps
you strike a good work-life balance
If you’re new to working from
home, it can be quite a daunting
prospect at first, especially during
the current times where it may
have become a reality quickly.
Don’t worry! Take it step by step
and you’ll be up and running in no
time. Check out our tips to make
sure you work well from home.
Tip #2 - Have a Morning Routine
Deciding to start work at a certain time
is all very well but you need a routine
that guides you to your chair. Think
about what you associate with the
start of work - making a coffee?
Returning home after a run? Even
getting dressed could count as long as
it triggers your “start work” switch.
Tip #3 - Set Ground Rules
If you live with other people you need
to agree certain rules. For example,
you may want to make it clear that
during your working hours you’re not
to be disturned. Or the children may
need to be told that they must be
quiet whilst you’re at your desk. Make
sure to set rules from the start.
Tip #4 - Take Breaks
When you’re working from home,
especially if you’re on your own, the
hours can disappear in what seems
like a short space of time. Give yourself
scheduled breaks so that you can get
away from the desk and phone at
regular intervals. A full lunch hour is
also a good way to take a break.
Tip #5 - Use a Dedicated Space
Work time is very different to leisure
time. For that reason, a dedicated
work space is important for separating
work activities from leisure activities. If
you don’t have a spare room you can
use as an office, you should at least
have a desk or a table that is set aside
purely for work.
Tip #6 - Have the Right Hardware
If you’re working from home for an
employer, make sure that they supply
you with the hardware you need to do
your job properly. If you have
everything you need, such as the right
IT equipment, this will help you do
your work productively rather than
fiddling around trying to fix issues.
Tip #7 - Have Social Contact
We all remember the messing around
in the office, sending joke emails and
having a laugh. Just because you’re
working from home doesn’t mean you
can’t still have fun. Make a point of
having some social time during the day
via email, social media or even
WhatsApp amongst colleagues.
Tip #8 - Enjoy the Perks
There’s no doubt about it that working
from home comes with natural perks.
For example, if you have a favourtite
daytime TV show, there’s no reason
you can’t have it on in the background.
If you don’t like wearing a shirt and tie,
then don’t! As long as you are doing
the work, enjoy those little perks.
Tip #9 - Stay Focused
It takes focus and self discipline to
work from home successfully but
everyone’s attention drifts sometimes,
even in an office setting. If you find
yourself searching for your next
holiday, make a mental note to
continue during your next break and
get back to work.
Tip #10 - Have an Evening Routine
As much as it’s important to have a
morning routine (see tip #2) it’s just as
an important to signal the end of the
working day. This could be making a
point of signing out of all business
apps, shutting down the computer and
going for a walk. Make sure to do it
consistently to mark the end of work.
